Discussion with artist Michele Serchuk

Come explore and discuss the idea that our inner most desires is part of what shapes how we move in the world. We look forward to your participation in the conversation.

Michele Serchuk’s erotic imagery explores sexuality, eroticism, and sexual identity in portraits of her subjects’ erotic identity and experience. Sexuality finds expression in physicality, and within our erotic gesture is a visual manifestation of emotional experience, of relationship, and of identity. We embellish our sexuality with symbolism and ritual drawn from our life experiences; it is intimate and deeply personal, a window to the inner self.

fet·ish: /ˈfediSH/ or \ˈfe-tish or /ˈfetɪʃ/

  • an inanimate object worshiped for its supposed magical powers or because it is considered to be inhabited by a spirit.
  • a form of sexual desire in which gratification is linked to an unusual degree to a particular object, item of clothing, part of the body, activity.
  • an extremely strong devotion to something.
  • heightened erotic desire and gratification in the presence of the fetishized object.
  • the eroticization of usually mundane objects.

THIS FETISH:
Something not usually eroticized but which elicits a heightened erotic response from my subject. It tugs at their sensual awareness, causes their breath to catch, revealing part of their sexual self.

These photos explore that revelation, creating a portrait capturing my subjects’ relationship to fetish.
